You want to win over a potential employer from the minute that they read your resume. You want to show them without a shadow of a doubt that you are the right candidate for the job. So how do you do that? How do you toot your own horn without coming off as cocky? It’s a true balance, but here are a few ways to ensure that you show up as the candidate that they can’t resist.
Highlight your accomplishments: Don’t wait until the interview to tell them how you launched a product or increased revenue. You want to showcase your best accomplishments on your resume so that they are right there in black and white. If you do this right then they will pop out and really help to separate you from the pack. This isn’t bragging but rather helping to show that you truly are the right candidate for the job. Don’t be afraid of this, but rather let what you have done be an excellent introduction to you as a candidate.
Play up your experience: Don’t be a wallflower and assume that they don’t want to hear much about your experience—shout it from the rooftops. If your experience covers different industries or you have skills that are outstanding, then you need to highlight them. You have certainly gained something special within your time in the workforce and now is the time to talk about it. The only way to get an interview from your resume is to talk about the wonderful experience you bring to the table. You are the only you!
Let your best traits shine through: This is not a time to be shy! If you have a killer sales instinct then now is the time to speak to it. If you have improved a process at work or helped to mentor younger employees, then speak up. You do need to toot your own horn or you will simply blend into the crowd. If you can find a way to showcase your personality or skills so that they complement the job, then you are going to get that call.
